¨¨I have never felt so part of life here. This morning Doña Gloria [invited me to her house to share the experience of making tortillas.] The soft glow of the [outside oven] illuminated the aging but beautiful features of her face. As she snatched a warm disc of cooked dough from my hand and replaced it with an old piece of white bread, I felt a joy rise in me; I was not a gringo, but a part of the community.

It is possible that through the veins of my counterpart runs not life-sustaining blood but the black bile of unmitigated evil. The thick slime that courses through her capillaries irrigates each cell of her body with the backed-up sewage that leaves her heart and, instead of removing waste and providing oxygen, as blood does in the bodies of those vertebrates not spawned by Satan, this sinister substance takes each passing sexond as an opportunity to heap more and more bad will, corruption and dereliction on teh cells of her body.¨¨
